Lorne is a small, seaside town on Louttit Bay in Victoria. It is situated about the Erskine River and is a popular destination on the Great Ocean Road tourist route. Lorne has long been known as the premier tourist resort along Victoria's Surf Coast on the Great Ocean Road. It's a perfect spot to stop off if you are doing a tour of the Great Ocean Road & is ideal to use as a base. Lorne is surrounded by the Great Otway National Park which is home to quite a few spectacular waterfalls, including Lorne's most famous - Erskine Falls. This hinterland area of Lorne has some great walks & is home to a host of wildlife including a healthy, resident population of koalas. What makes Lorne different to many other coastal towns is that not only does it have a fantastic beach & main street, with shops, cafes & numerous fine restaurants, but the fact that it has a temperate rainforest, waterfalls, rivers & walking tracks, which all run down to the sea at Lorne. Day trippers & people who don't know Lorne often don't realise this & as a result may book for only one night or decide to just pass through. Lorne really does deserve more than just one night. The beach at Lorne has appeal to a wide clientelle. Fishermen, swimmers, windsurfers & surfers alike all relish in what this secluded bay can offer. Families love Lorne because it is so safe for children. Lorne has loads of cafes & restaurants & a wide variety of shops. And most importantly, there is ample accommodation in Lorne & a wide variety to cater for all tastes & budgets. The town's population swells to more than 15,000 each New Year's Eve when the Falls Festival takes place. During the first weekend of January over 20,000 spectators visit Lorne when the town hosts the 1.2 km Pier to Pub swim (described in the Guinness Book of Records as "the largest organised ocean swim in the world" and currently capped at 4,000 competitors), the 8 km Mountain to Surf run, and the Lorne Surf Boat Race. Lorne accommodation just keeps getting better.
