Slumped glass and kiln formed glass by Dominic O'Leary at Otway Studio Art

Otway Studio Art: Individually crafted slumped glass and kiln formed glass by Dominic O'Leary
Two basic techniques are used by Dominic in his
kiln formed glass creations: fusing and slumping or as it is sometimes
known, sagging. There are other forms of glass which are created in
a kiln, most notably casting. Fusing is used to round edges of cut glass,
to fuse or laminate sheets of glass together or to fire in a colour.
The colours used are powder form on glazes which are also used in china
painting. These can be added dry or mixed with a medium and painted
on. Fusing is also used to attach pieces of glass to a base or standard
design piece, to imprint a texture or pattern prior to slumping. Slumping
is the stage which creates the design shape. It can be done in conjunction
with the above stage depending on the piece or it can be a separate
firing altogether. Put simply the glass is heated until its softness
allows it to fall through or slump into a predetermined design mold.
These molds can be the shape of the eventual piece or an open mold supported
by kiln stilts with the glass falling through a simple hole and landing
on the kiln shelf to form the base as in a vase. Dominic specialises
in slumped glass and kiln formed glass. Exquisite glass creations from
the beautiful Otway Ranges. |
