Moonlight Head
Moonlight Head is just off the Great Ocean Road but is totally unknown to the multitude of tourists who simply drive by. Moonlight Head should not be missed. It’s about 16 kilometres west of Lavers Hill. Take the turn off onto Moonlight Head Road from the Great Ocean Road. It takes about ten minutes on an unsealed road to arrive at the carpark near Moonlight Head. You then have a very pleasant walk through some casuarina trees before you come to a platform almost one hundred metres above the sea with sensational panoramic views of the Great Southern Ocean. Nearby is the fabulous Wreck Beach where the anchors of the shipwrecks Marie Gabrielle (1870) and Fiji (1890) are embedded in the reef and visible at low tide. This stretch of the coast is renowned for its shipwrecks. The anchors are a couple of hundred metres to your right after descending about 400 steps to the beach. The walk along the beach to the anchors should only be attempted at low tide. If you make the effort to visit this area it will be one of your highlights of your trip along the Great Ocean Road.
