Johanna really is one of the jewels of the Otways. Johanna is located 35 kilometres west of Apollo Bay. It is fast becoming one of the must stay places along the Great Ocean Road and for very good reason. Johanna is simply gorgeous. State forests merge with finely cultivated green paddocks where cows, kangaroos and wild deer enjoy a feed. Johanna Beach is not to be missed. Easily one of the best beaches in Australia, it stretches for a few kilometres and will demand of you the odd beach walk. Keep your eyes open for feeding seals and during winter you will often see whales as they make their way down the coast. This is also a sensational surf fishing beach with Australian salmon often on the bite. The surf is also excellent with the world championships sometimes being held here if Bells Beach is too small. The accommodation here is nothing short of excellent. Some great places to relax after a day on the Great Ocean Walk. For those who are more interested in camping than self contained accommodation you will be able to stay here for free. Johanna is one of the few camping sites along the Great Ocean Road where fees do not apply. Be quick though as it can become very crowded in peak season. Toilets are available but no shower or laundry facilities. The locals who live here have just recently constructed a free gas BBQ. How many places can you travel to where the locals do this?
